The Banana Farmer and the Frost — The Miracle of the Protected Orchard

He was a secular farmer. Bananas were his livelihood. And when Keren Hashviis approached him about keeping Shmitah, he made a deal: he would observe Shmitah and take on Shmirat Shabbat throughout the year. In return, Keren Hashviis would register him in their program, cover his expenses, and all the produce would be handled through Otzar Beis Din in full accordance with halacha.
He agreed. He had never done anything like this before in his life.
Then came the frost.
Israel was hit with a brutal cold snap — weeks of relentless cold that bananas simply cannot survive. When frost hits a banana orchard mid-growth, the fruit turns brown and rock-solid. It is a total loss. Every banana farmer in the region was bracing for the worst.
When this farmer finally made it out to his orchard, he didn't know what he would find.
Every single one of his bananas was yellow and green.
Not one tree had been touched. His orchard sat directly alongside his neighbors' — the same land, the same frost, the same weather. But it was as if an invisible wall had been drawn around his farm. While the surrounding orchards were destroyed, his was completely unharmed.
He grabbed his phone and called Keren Hashviis, shouting into the receiver: "Karah Nes! Karah Nes!" — "A miracle happened! A miracle happened!"
In the aftermath, Keren Hashviis reported something remarkable: farmers who had until then refused to keep Shmitah — seeing the losses of their neighbors and the untouched orchard of the one man who had — began calling the Keren, asking how to commit.
More than the farmer keeps Shmitah — Shmitah keeps the farmer.
